Transitioning back into ‘work-mode’ from a lengthy holiday vacation is hard, but doable with the right set of strategies. The difficulty lies in getting out of the relaxed habits of the holiday break, and back into the more active routines of a normal workday.
So, the first thing you can do to make going back to work after the holiday easier is to regain a sense of normalcy around the house. You can do this by taking down and packing up the Christmas decorations. It’s better to do it while you’re still work-free and vacationing at home. Plus, the mindfulness required in putting those trinkets away will help keep your mind relax and not feel anxious about going back to work, even just for a few hours.
It will also do you good to start adjusting your sleep cycle back to how it is when you’re working two to three days before the holiday break ends. This will also help you get used to waking up early again.
Take care of your laundry, groceries and other personal chores so that you can go back to work relieved and unburdened of worries over these matters. This will ensure you have a clean set of clothes to wear, as well as a healthy breakfast to eat on your first morning back to work.
List down the things you need to accomplish on your first day back at work. Set realistic goals for the day to keep you moving forward despite the holiday hangover. Arriving about fifteen minutes earlier on the first day will give you time to settle back into regular work routines.
Greet and smile at people to give an impression of your willingness and enthusiasm to get back to work. Even if you don’t mean it, fake it till you make it. Talk to the appropriate people to know of any projects that need to be accomplished soon. Make an effort to tackle as much of the unfinished work from last year without exhausting yourself. Overtime is not ideal for your first day back at work.
Most importantly, do not wait for the ‘right mood’ to go back to work. Never expect to be back in full swing right away, but instead take each day in stride until you are back in full working mode.
