Self-esteem is often defined as the persistent perception of an individual on how he or she is as a person.
It is important to understand that if a loved one, whether a family member or friend, suffers from low self-esteem, try to convince him that he is much more than what he think he is.
Try to build self-esteem does not imply any sort of radical change in perception. Self-love and self-respect are something you must constantly work and build over time.
Trying to convince people of their self-esteem by constant affirmation may even turn against you because you break their world view about how they see themselves. When the victims are so negatively, this disruption in their worldview with such sudden and aggressive ways may cause shock, requiring them to respond violently or to get out almost immediately.
People with low self-esteem should begin this journey by accepting themselves slowly with an equal appreciation of their faults and gifts. Once that happens, they begin to set realistic goals for themselves and recognizing what they are.
The process of self-acceptance to greater self-esteem can be helped by professionals trained to make this process successful. In many cases, a therapy with trained psychologists is recognized as a method that works very well. During these sessions with psychologists, individuals have the opportunity to review their negative perceptions and begin to reassess the negative perceptions they may have of themselves since childhood.
Participation in activities will help them discover their gifts and talents. Even if they are treated, you can contribute to help your loved ones to choose an activity or course for which they can participate. Music, art, sport or dance are good areas to start.
Not only did they discover all the talents they have and that they should follow, but they will also be able to find a way through which they can express their feelings constructively. Once they gain a sense of ownership of a particular activity and talent, this could become one of the things they can enjoy more.
In conclusion, be able to help a loved one in the process of building self-esteem means not only being there for them but help them get the help they need from professionals. Help them in difficult times, saying, for example, the improvements they make over time. Help them discover their talents and their gifts and to recognize the accomplishments they get in the process.
